How to Think About the Right Colour Palette for Your Website

Choosing the right colours is just as important as other aspects of your web design. A great colour combination can make your website positively stand out and convey the kind of message you want to your audience.

Though at first it may seem a simple task, it can be very difficult to decide on what colours to use. There are, however, some considerations that could help you decide on the right colour palette.

Type of Business

The type of business or niche area can help to determine how you choose your colours. A science journal usually requires neutral colours. A business website or online newspaper may require mostly a black and white theme or pastel or light colours, and so would a law firm. Generally, for these types of websites, we use colours such as black and white, blue, brown and grey. Background colours should be mainly plain, as the aim is to not draw the attention away from the information. You could then use bolder accent colours for headings, titles and sub-headings to make them easier to read and to draw attention.

Unlike a journal or firm, an artist or a photographer may use bold colours as an expression of their artistic nature. For these individuals this is expected and admired, depending on how well it is done.

Brand Logo Colours

One of the first considerations in setting the tone for the look and feel of your website is your logo. Usually, the dominant colour(s) of the logo can be used to determine the overall colour scheme. The colours you choose for your logo are usually associated with your brand – therefore, using your logo to help determine colour palette is a valid option. Choose at least one dominant colour from your logo and then at least two or three accent colours to complement this.

Use different colours from your competitors – something that would resonate with your audience, but they must also be colours you like. Your website is an extension of you, so you must be comfortable with the look and feel of it.
